Crown XTi 4000 DSP Vs Driverack PA+ DSP

bloggybloggy Posts: 21
Hey people,

A quick question to all you experts out there. A friend of mine has asked me about his system and the best way to set it up.

He has just purchased a Crown Xti 4000 amp to power his fairly old JBL MPro 418s subs as his old amp died. He currently uses a driverack PA+ but knows there is built in DSP on the amp itself.

Would you recommend letting the driverack deal with all the xover and eq settings and turn the amp DSP off or set the amp up aswell as the Driverack PA+? Any advice is apreciated.

Thanks in advance :)

If I had both, I'd use both. Using the auto EQ to "flatten the system" outdoors to get the baseline. Then transfer the data to the PEQ's in the amp (not sure how many are available) to get the system as ruler flat as possible. Then, you still have the PEQ's in the DRPA to make broader bell or shelf adjustments for "tailoring" the sound in the room.

If the speakers require a lot of PEQ's to flatten then you may need the PEQs in the amp and the DRPA.

Does the amp have limiters? RMS, even?

    My 2 cents.

    Hey Dra,

Im not that familier with these amps as im using QSC RMX 2450's for system.

Ive hooked up my laptop to the amp by USB using the Band Manager software. Its alot easier than trying to use the 3 buttons on the front of the amp.

The Xti 4000 amp seems to have lots of options. Xover, limiters (off, -3dB, -6dB or -12dB), EQ, Out EQ & Delay). My intial thought was to use both, just so that both items are doing the same thing.... Looks like I will be lending him my RTA mic :-)

    Thanks again :D

Like Dra says the DRPA will help you immeasurably in the setup of the speakers. I'd use the PEQ's and get as close as possible (there are 4 or 5 as I recall) but the compressor on the Xti is far better.

for even greater gain before feedback use the auto eq one last time and use the FBX unit.

    Gadget,

Just been looking at the amp,

Input EQ - Sub Synth Option, Low Shelf Filter (User definable frequency), 6 No EQ Filters (User definable frequencies) & High Shelf Filter (User definable frequency)
Output EQ - 8 EQ filters, each with a user definable frequency.

Im guess I should have enough variation there to get pretty close to the DRPA+.

Thanks once again for the advice.

More PEQ's than the DRPA actually, so good to go more than likely, unless he has crap for speakers.
Since the limter doesn't say RMS, then it is likely Peak. I would prefer RMS, but hey.

My interpretation of this comment is that you are setting values in like parameters of both the XTi4000 and the DRPA. Using delay as an example, if you set 10ms of delay on the DRPA output feeding the XTi4000 and also set 10ms of delay on the XTi4000, you will have a total of 20ms of delay. Just being clear.
