Help, Something's wrong...SRX715...SRX718s...DRPA...XTI4000s

I have the above equipment. I have set the Driverack PA to what I believe to be the right settings, but now I am wondering if I am under powering the speakers. Here is what I have it set at:

Top XTI4000 in bridge mono mode running the two top srx715s
Bottom XTI4000 in bridge mono mode running the two bottom srx718s.

The settings in the DBX are a little weird. I am actually running the DBX in stereo since the XTI4000 has a Y-mode where it combines the left and right input into a mono input, but I can still tell the DBX that the amps are run in bridge mono. So, it is set that way. The output from the amps Y into each cable that runs to the boxes. I am clipping the amps and can't get what I believe to be the volume out of my boxes. They sound great right now but I don't want to clip the amps and I think I should be getting more. The amps put out 3200w at 4-ohms. Both sets of boxes are rated at 800w/1600w/3200w Continuous/Program/Peak.

I hope that wasn't 2 confusing. Please help me get the optimal performance out of the equipment I have guys! Thank you!

George

That doesn't sound right. I think the Y-mode is for summing a stereo signal into mono. You need to mix mono or Y to mono from the board into 1 side of the DRPA then to the "A" or "1" side only of the amp in bridge mode and not use the Y-mode.

Any chance you have engaged the limiters in the amp and the red lights you saw were limit indicators rather than clip lights? Also, have you engaged the limiters in the DRPA?

  • The limiter is on in the DBX at -10 but not on the amps. I can only get up to like -20db on my allen and heath board and then both amps start clipping. Out of curiosity, if I am mono bridging these amps and the two subs are on one and the two tops are on the other, am I severely under powering the boxes?

Scroll down to "Gain Structure", read all of it, and do whatever you haven't already done. Report back when that is complete. Shut off the limiter in the DR while doing gain structure.

I don't know about severely under powered, but you have very little headroom...The Limiters in the XTi are better than the ones in the DRPA/DRPA+/PX. As Dennis said go through the gain structure again...

So, while this system could maybe handle some more power, it should still be adequate with what it has. I wonder if there is a phase thing going on somewhere?

Possibly...George, have you verified that all your cables are wired properly? No reversals in the mic cables from the mixer to the DR and the DR to the amps.. and the speaker cables?

The 260 config for the speakers and amps you have are:
    718's
    HPF 30.4 hz BW18
    LPF 88.4 hz BW48 gain -0-
    715's
    HPF 90.4 hz BW48 gain -1.7

    57 (or about 1 o'clock)
Does that jive with your setup George?
