Driverack PA, just bought system

I have a broad question, or ask everyone's opinion. We just bought a Pa that includes:
Driverack PA
PAS Subs 2-18's each X 2
PAS tops 2-15's, 1 horn w/2" driver each X 2
2 Crown 802s bridged, ea for bottoms
1 Carvin DCM 2500 running stereo for mids
1 Peavey PV-4c running stereo for highs

I am old school in that I am used to running seperate x over and BGW amps into cabs. The driverack is new to me but I am learning. I have spent a week reading the posts here. Just when I thought I understood it, now I realize I still have a lot to learn. So far I love it. Question is this, with the driverackPA, what external gear do you recommend at the mixer, do we still need a stereo 31band graph? I know effects like delay, reverb, etc. But what else? Gate? used to run a gate on the drum mikes. we are a high energy top 40 country band, with mixture of southern/classic rock mixed in.
I have been through the set up on the driverack and believe the previous owner set it up pretty good.

I look forward to your thoughts. Thanks in advance.

  • I am still having my problems figuring it all out however, You dont need an eq its in there, all I have is a comp/gate just for drums because the drpa has a comp but it does everything cant just do the drums etc so I use the dbx 166xl for my knich and snare etc, I also have a new lexicon effects unit, other than that the driverack has everysingle thing in there you need so my rack now has only 3 things in it the DRPA, A comp/gate and an effects unit, the driverack is all you need, I sold or traded in everything else now, I do miss all the lights etc lol but it is really all in the unit thats why its made and thats what it does, I would say if your using it for live stuff and have a board with effects built in then all you need is the comp for the drums. My god it has a xover, full eq, comp, limiter, delay, subharmonic synth, a full rackfull of gear all in one unit. I use the comp in the inserts of the drum chanels. I am not giving advice because I have a long way to go but I will say with comfidence that the drpa is all you need.Good luck! And this is the best site on earth to get to know how to use it right!

    Agreed, mostly.

Another way to look at it is... if you need an effect (rev, delay, etc) or a solution (gate, comp, EQ, etc) for an individual mic or instrament, then you need a device for that. If it is for the entire PA then the Driverack will take care of it.

An outboard EQ allows for quick treatments , or for a guest engineer to do his bidding with the system. This is not fast or intuitive on the DRPA, or the PX, but with the 260 on up with the GUI and a computer it's quite acceptable.

Are these the RS 1.2 or RS 2.2...

We have a friend that has the 1.2's but we ripped the crossovers out and bi-amped them and they REALLY took off!

  • if you were to add another eq along with the DR where in the chain would it go? before or after the DR, And would having one mess up the auto eq function? I mean is there ever a time where that much eq is needed or is it just redunancy? Thanks

Typically pre-driverack and no, the auto EQ is IN the driverack so if the EQ is pre-driverack it won't make any difference. The thing is, if the quality of the EQ is poor, like the Behringer analog graphics, or the ART.. or Alesis.. they will detract, or decrease the sound quality... so, if it isn't a quality piece then skip it...
