Live monitors

I'm looking at some new monitors and would like some opinions. Kind of looking at the JBL, JRX MRX and SRX monitors. Anybody have any experience with these? I also noticed the JRX and SRX are 90x50 degree and the MRX is 70x70 degree coverage. What difference would this make in the dynamics onstage?

Thanks!

That's quite a swing price wise from the JRX to the SRX...I have not played with the JRX, or MRX but I have to tell you I am thoroughly unimpressed by the SRX monitors...Now granted I'm not a big JBL fan... but if the SRX are as mediocre as they are the others must be... well lets just say there are better ones out there.

How much money are you looking to spend?

As for the pattern, it all depends on how you want to deploy the monitors and how much coverage you need. If your going to put 2 monitors in the same proximity... the 70 deg conical would not play well together...If the others were set up so that the pattern was 50 degrees horizontal... you could put them side by side with the patterns just not interacting at the height of the listener If however it was a 90 degree horizontal pattern... that would not be a good thing...

For the price of an SRX you could get QSC K12's

If your looking for unpowered only there is a monitor on the PSW thats supposed to be really nice.

If you have the amps I could find those monitors on the PSW for you if your leaning toward passive monitors ...

But if you don't have the power, or you have poor power... those QSC K12's look mighty tempting. I have had a few bands come through with the older HPR 12's and they were impressive, but the new K12's have DSP processing built in and 1000watts of available power.. and at under $800... (try Full Compass for a price, they usually have a good price if NSL doesn't have the product and they don't carry QSC... you will need to call for the best price though...)

The low budget champ is the Yamaha club series monitors @ under $300.

Actually if your a JBL guy and you need to impress people with the orange badge... they have come out with the PRM612M that has been getting good reviews...

    So, got power?

If I had $1000 per right now I would probably get a really good IEM system... but that's just me

Well my son who is the drummer will only use iem's, he uses Ultimate ears with a Sennheiser tx but the guitar guys won't hear of it (no pun there) and always complain they want more monitor. The monitors they are using are very old peaveys so I thought about getting some new ones. I kind of hate hauling the amp rack around for monitor amps so powered looks enticing. We don't have a local shop so hearing different monitors is out, I just have to take a poll of opinions, and give something a try.

I may pick up a QSC k12 and give it a try.

Pretty impressive little boxes .. and could be used as mains...here is a list in order of price for the ones that the guys on the PSW talk about...

JBL PRX612M (new and pretty much unknown but there is some good buzz about them...
QSC K12 have a great rep...
Peavey Impulse 12D (brand new and with 1200 watt IPR amp.. and a ribbon driver) I can't wait to hear these.. BUT ...
    RCF ART 322A
    FBT Maxx/HiMaxx

These (except the Hi Maxx) are generally below $1000 each...

If you intend to do A/B level national acts NONE of these will cut the mustard...but you'll spend 3-4 times your budget EASILY...

But then again these are only as good as the signal sent them... In other words GIGO (garbage in...) and ANY speaker no matter how expensive or well tuned WILL feed back at some point...and the LOUDER the stage volume the tougher the FOH guys job.

I'm currently in a casino lounge writing this doing a full out punk band @ 95 dBc...NOT possible if the stage volume is too high...and these kids are definitely working with me... I mean I have 130 watts to work with (per monitor) and some REALLY crappy Grund Audio 12" monitors that weigh like 24 lbs...but I tuned them with Driveracks and they are abiding by my stage volume requirements, and they think these are the best sounding monitors they have heard...so it's all relative.. If you come into a gig like this with even half stacks and 25 watt amps your going to be too loud for the gig and end up not getting asked back...

A couple of weeks ago I had a band in (same casino lounge) and the keyboard/fiddle player was deaf... they brought their own QSC HPR12 monitors... that's 1000 watts per monitor. I have to average 95dBc.. his monitor ALONE was 106dB @ FOH....now tell me how that's supposed to work? The more power you have on the stage volume the more you'll have to contend with @ FOH...
    Just sayin...
