266 XL COMPRESSOR SET UP

bugspotterbugspotter Posts: 2
Just purchased a dbx266 and I am asking for a little set up advice
the scenario:
4 piece acoustic band 2 acoustic guitars , bass and four vocals and drums, but only kick drum is miked

system:
soundcraft efx12 mixer>
dbx 231 eq>
dbx 266xl>
powered mackie FOH

My question is where is a good starting point for the settings on compressor, the plan is to compress the left and right mix as a whole not single channels, to control a loud vocal or kick drum hit and maintain a smooth overall mix

To use your "kick drum hit" as an example, if you insert a comp on the kick channel, it will control the level of loud kick drum hits but if you insert on L/R, the comp will control the level of the entire mix during a loud kick drum hit (think squash). You will have a happier mix with comps inserted on individual channels.
