Proper Recording levels when using DBX NX40 and 224

I want to record onto cassette and open reel using either my DBX NX40 or 224. If I record to near 0 DB using either unit I get distortion on playback. Should I be recording far less than 0 DB with DBX or is there something else going on. I am recording to a Pioneer CT-F1000 and Teac A-1230 using quality Maxell and TDK media.

I can't answer your question directly, but can you monitor the recording in real time? If so, that would help you set the levels. 0DB may be zero headroom.

So, your trying to get noise reduction on to tape? Are you familiar with what the noise reduction does? What cassette deck do you have? -0-dBv should not be a problem... does this happen without the noise reduction in the loop?
  • To all who responded - Thanks. I have gone back and more carefully recorded material on both decks. The distortion did not appear this time but I kept the record level around -3db. I did notice that with the DBX inline, the resulting record level was reduced about 3db while recording. Playback level was about the same as the non-DBX record level. So I guess I just have to more careful when I am recording with the DBX units inline.
