266xl compressor/gate channel 1 breaks up

I have a 266 xl compressor that "breaks up" intermittently on channel 1. Channel 2 works fine. I'm thinking a bad capacitor. Is there something I can do/check before I have to have it checked by a tech? I bought it used for not a lot of money (now I see why) and would not like too invest too much more into this thing.
