Running only bass guitar, kick drum and floor toms to subs

I talked to a friend that has been playing in a local bar band for many decades. He has a QSC Ksub/K12 system (two Ksubs, one K12 per side). He told me he is only running his bass guitar, kick drum and floor toms to the Ksubs (nothing else in the subs). He also has the bass guitar, kick drum and floor toms in the main mix to the K12's on top. Have you ever heard of this practice? What are the pros and cons of running this way?

It sounds like your friend is running some version of aux-fed subs. Pretty common in the audio world. For pros and cons I suggest a google search, there are tons of articles on this set up out there.
I feed my subs via a bus instead of an aux. Very similar to what your friend does, kick, floor tom, bass guitar and keys only.
