Serial convertors (USB or USB2 capable: does it matter)

Does it matter if the converter specifies USB vs USB2 if you have USB2 ports.

    It shouldn't matter. They're exactly the same except the USB2 specification allows for greater throughput (i.e. a fatter pipe so the bits and bytes can flow faster). But the serial port on the other end is the bottleneck with respect to speed anyway, so it doesn't really affect anything in this case.
