New setup with Crown Xti 6000 amp

keyman88keyman88 Posts: 32
My pa is used primarily for medium size 100-500 person live band clubs
My current setup has:
2-JBL SRX 715 tops (Biamped)
2-JBL SRX 718 Subs
2-TCS tm112 Monitors (full range) would you suggest biamping them?
(i use a couple of powered qsc monitors when I need more monitors, but may add a couple more passive ones to the setup soon)
On my DR260 I have a simple setup:
input A (Mains)
input B (subs)
Output 1 = Highs
Output 2 = Mids
Output 3 = Subs

I am using 1 qsc plx 3402 bridged for my mids
I am using 1 qsc plx 3402 bridged for my subs
I am using 1 qsc plx 1804 (1 channel)for my highs and 1 channel for the monitors

with the background out of the way, I am adding 2 more JBL SRX 718 Subs and a Crown XTi 6000 amp.
Fyi here are all of the amps I own (Keep in mind sometimes we only get 2 ciruits for the whole band!)
3 qsc plx 3402
1 qsc plx 3002
2 qsc plx 1804 (not bridgeable)
1 crown xls 5000 (Approx 70 lbs!)
1 crown XTi 6000
My idea was to put the monitors in input B on the driverack 260 so I can use the feedback suppression and use the crossover and limiter on the xti6000 for the subs and not have the subs going through the DR260 and I'm not sure if thats a good idea or not. I'm not having terrible feedback problems with the monitors, but it just seemed like a good precaution.
Any help on what you think would be the best setup with the gear I have will be most appreciated.
Also any ideas on sub placement? I plan on stacking 2 single 18's on each side with the mains above them
Thanks
Gary

    Hi Gary... Gary here

Ya, I'd do that... in fact I'm in the process of setting up a system that way right now... you have the benefit of the XTI 6000 which has onboard processing if you want to run the subs like that .. what are you doing Aux fed subs?

I definately like the idea of putting the subs all in one location... that way they couple and you get 3dB of free SPL AND with a mono sub config you get more even coverage and no comb filtering.

Hey Gary thanks for getting back to me so fast.
I am using aux fed subs and I have 2 questions concerning the subs:

    1. when you you say to cluster the subs (as I have 4 single 18's) and I'm using it in a bar band situation, where exactly should I cluster them, on the floor in the center in front of the singer? Also, I haven't done this but was wondering if I have subs on a caster board for loading & unloading, I need to take them off and put them directly on the floor right? For ease sake it would be nice to leave them on the casters but I assume the thump won't be the same, right?

    2. With the Crown XTi6000 if I use the dsp in the amp can I link the output to one of my qsc plx 3402's for a second pair of subs and still get the crossover points & limiters etc...into the qsc?
Also about amp selection, what would you suggest with this setup?

    2@ JBL SRX 715 800w/1600w/3200w program/continuous/peak
    4@ JBL SRX 718 800w/1600w/3200w program/continuous/peak
    2@ TCS TM112 400w/800w nominal/program

    3@ QSC PLX 3402 700w/1100w/3400w 8ohms/4ohms/4ohm bridged
    1@ Crown XTi6000 1200w/2100w/6000w 8ohms/4ohms/4ohm bridged
    1@ Crown XTS5000 1100w/1800w/5000w 8ohms/4ohms/4ohm bridged
    1@ QSC PLX 3002 600w/900w/3000w 8ohms/4ohms/4ohm bridged
    2@ QSC PLX 1804 600w/900w 8ohms/4ohms/Not Bridgeable

    I am thinking
    1 Bridged plx3402 for the 2 mids (3400w@4ohms) 1700w each
    1 Bridged plx3402 for 2 subs (3400w@4ohms) 1700w each
    1 Bridged XTi6000 for 2 subs (6000w@4ohms) 3000w each
seems a bit of overkill, but running in stereo is slightly underpowered @ 1200w/side
    1 stereo QSC plx1804 for 2 monitors
1 stereo QSC plx1804 for the highs and 1 monitor

    Thanks for expertise in advance,
    Gary

My gut is that you are not going to get the processing on the thru connection, I couldn't find a block diagram but I'm pretty sure the DSP is post in/thru

I would go with more power...but then I have been heard to say "too much power is never enough!"
in fact here is my next amp purchase:

    4@ JBL SRX 718 800w/1600w/3200w program/continuous/peak
    2@ TCS TM112 400w/800w nominal/program
    I am thinking
    1 Bridged plx3402 for the 2 mids (3400w@4ohms) 1700w each
    1 Bridged plx3402 for 2 subs (3400w@4ohms) 1700w each
    1 Bridged XTi6000 for 2 subs (6000w@4ohms) 3000w each
seems a bit of overkill, but running in stereo is slightly underpowered @ 1200w/side
    1 stereo QSC plx1804 for 2 monitors
1 stereo QSC plx1804 for the highs and 1 monitor

    Like you say here...

Oh ... sorry...If you can put the subs across the front that is the preferred location. If you cannot do that then choose either side (but there are usually factors that make one location better than another.. that are too numerous to mention...)

There are a few things that we generally hold to be rules of thumb for subs...

    1. against the wall or more than 8 feet (be certain to avoid 3 1/2 feet like the plague http://www.peavey.com/support/technotes ... lation.pdf )

    2. Together, or more than 45 feet apart ( A few inches, even a foot or slightly more apart across the front of the stage would be fine)

    3. When coupling, we get 3dB for each boundary, and each additional sub... a corner coupled sub gets 9dB of free power BUT... the tradeoff is that the subs become somewhat of a one note wonder... kind of like a Hermoltz resonator... what that means is a sub in freespace would sound best across the full frequency range.. a boundary loaded sub will be peaky in frequency response.

Wow....great info on the sub placement, I'm gonna try them out in front of the band tonight, can't wait to hear them!
I did find out the dsp on the crown XTi is NOT passed out the thru on the back pannel, I guess I'll need to get another XTi or driverack...it's only money right?
    Thanks,
    Gary
