Playstation 3

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried controlling a Sony Playstation 3? Either through ethernet or IR? We have a client that's going to be using that as his DVD player for a few rooms, and I didn't know if we're going to just have to tell him to use the remote or if it ican be controlled through the touch panel.

I did a Playstation 2 with IR. The response was too sluggish for gaming, but it was fine for the DVD, which was all they really cared about - they would rather use the native controller for the games anyway.

    Recent update ?

Anybody having recent update on the subject?
I need to control a Playstation 3 for the DVD player part? Any IR file available somewhere?

    Thanks.

To control the PS3 with IR you need and external device of some sort. There are a few "Custom" solutions that have been discussed on RemoteCentral. I've used the Nyko IR dongle and it works (http://www.nyko.com/nyko/products/?i=113).

The main issue is Power. There is currently no way to discreetly turn off the power.

I'm not aware of any IP control capabilities.

A thought occurred to me yesterday while doing some grocery shopping in Aldi. They are selling wired PS3 controllers for AU$15. Perhaps the easiest solution is to chop one up & use a micro/relays to drive it. I suppose not all controls will be available, but hopefully the basics will work. They may be more complex than I hope, but for $15 it doesn't seem to be too great a risk.

This guy makes one that has been getting good reviews and good support:

$35 for control, $50 for discrete on/off support.

So good it costs $100 now, supply and demand at work... Okay, it is "on sale" for $75...

With that said, discrete power would make it worth it. I would still rather put a Denon in if they aren't playing games with it.

Where are the ir codes for each of these devices?

Trying to decide which one to purchase

    Thanks

    Chris
  • The schmartz unit uses standard Sony DVD commands.

I think IR2BT uses standard codes from Sony PS2 IR remote -- in any event, codes are at IR2BT.com in a variety of file formats.

    FYI:

    http://www.remoteshoppe.com/index.php?itemid=874

Lists the above and a few more, there is also a link to an article discussing them all.

EDIT: Anyone find a serial to BlueTooth adapter for PS3 control? [dreaming] Feedback?

EDIT 2: I see on the PS3 that one may be able to control the unit via PSP. Has anyone tried this and maybe reverse-engineered the network communication?
  • Gigaware for PS3

Has anyone ever tried to capture the IR from a Gigaware IR remote for the PS3? Or have an IR file that works with the Dongle that comes with the remote.

Same situation as others here... customer boardroom, wants to use the PS3 for Bluray DVD and want me to control it (DVD functions only). Found the PS2 solution listed on remote central - but customer went out and bought the Gigaware IR remote from RadioShack. I've tried several times to capture the IR from the remote - but it never works when downloaded to the controller.

    Thoughts??
  • The guys from forum mentioned they have used those units for controling PS3 - http://www.schmartstuff.com/ps3ir500.html
I have ordered too, still waiting for shipping.

At the risk of sounding stupid... What is a PS3 toothfairy device?
  • Hey, guys,
I'm not sure how to translate HEX IR codes to .IRL format.
could anyone share the playstation3(PS3IR-500) .IRL file?
    I would appreciate. Thanks

It's an IR to Bluetooth converter basically.

Here's the link to the .irl file I created for use with it.

  • Just for info here is a very good review of most of the interfaceS available to control a PS3:

Anyone find a means to power off the PS3 yet?

From what I've learned so far it appears the logitech set up uses a macro for off. The macro listed was:
    PS
    PS
    PS
    PS
    PS
    delay 1 sec
    enter
    delay 1 sec
    enter

Unfortunately I tried this to no avail. Personally I don't care if the freak'n thing stays on 24/7 but if there's a way to power down I'll include it in the control file.

Logitech. What PS3 command/s is the AA issuing to turn it off?

I use the RE-BL X at home and it works very well as long as you use a 12v power supply instead of batteries.

It does use a macro to turn the PS3 off, but it works every time. The unit even senses the power of the PS3 through the USB port (if setup using the PC software).

Here's the HEX IR Code sheet:

Don't know what PS3 command that is.

Don't know what PS3 command that is.

The Audio Authority is the same as the RE-BL and twice the price. The above hex code triggers the power off macro in the converter, but is not an actual command to the PS3.
  • viningvining Posts: 4,368
I would imagine those hex codes are specific to the AA device to make the AA device control the PS3 via bluetooth or USB.

I would think the same applies to the RE-BL X device and the Harmony remote codes it lists are specific to REBL and availble in the Harmony database so their remotes can control the REBL interface.

I need the specific macro or HEX codes for the Harmony (Logitech) PS3 interface. I have all the other commands but the power off and the macro I found that is supposed power off the PS3 doesn't seem to work.
