My understanding of the iPad SDK is that it will run iPhone apps at iPhone 480x320 res or has a x2 button to boost these up - ie bigger buttons.

If you already have an iPhone app - it is easy to create a new iPad version of the app using 1024x768 res & suitable graphics and have this ready for launch on the app-store in time for launch day.
