Font rendering

I've been tweaking NS a bit so that it would better suit my needs (colours etc) and I've been trying to find a font that NS actually renders well.

I've tried Andale Mono, Terminus, Fixedsys and a whole lot more. Unfortunately there isn't a single font that renders well on all sizes. I'm using Dejavu sans mono now because that's the only font I found that renders remotely well in NS at 10 points. The rest just looks bad.

Has anyone been able to tweak NS/Windows in such a fashion that it renders it all well? Or at least a single font well at multiple point-values?

Edit: Here's a comparison of it. Same typeface same size.

I'm using Courier New. It may be the default but I do know I've tried many fonts and this is what 've been using @ 10pt. Works fine for me.

I use Trebuchet MS 14. My eyesight is pretty well shot. So, I use the fat font colors-on-black background.

I am using Consolas @ 10pts for the font in all of my editors. The font was created for Vista and is included in Vista and Win7.

This is also a good tool to get text looking better in Win XP. http://www.microsoft.com/typography/cleartype/tuner/tune.aspx

Let me know if you want me to send you the font.

-- edit -- I just noticed that the font looks fuzzy in the screen shot, but that is only because of the quality settings of my screen capture utility.

For some reason it seems to render dejavu mono on a dark background much better than on a light background. So I switched to my dark theme again and now it looks fine.

    This is @ 10 points.

ClearType Tuner, works pretty good. Sharpens the text up nicely, thanks for the link!
  • Here is the font Consolas in 11 points. I like it.

    Bitstream Vera Sans Mono

I might add, since I saved the screenshot as a jpg, it's quite a bit fuzzier looking here than it really is ....

I like it. The colors are very Vim-esque.

Speaking of Vim... We should turn this thread into (or start a new thread) repository of color schemes.

I have attached a zip file with my editor prefs (only the editor option was checked) and the consolas font. Hopefully other will follow suit.

I think there has already been one about a year or so ago. But, it is fun to see what all y'all do.

I included my preferences as well. (just the editor, so you can easily try it if you want to).

@the8thst, thanks for the link with the tuner. Fixed the font quite a bit. Now I can look at it and rejoice compared to before.

I would love it if I could tweak specific things a bit more.

And some things should be fixed like the operator including () and {}. [] are not included, but I want .,;:=+- etc to be separate.

    Guess I can only dream.

I went to a darker theme and smaller font after seeing someone's screen - it just looked cleaner.

Here's mine - but I'm going to take Jorde's for a spin today. Looks pretty modern.

I bounce between Courier New 10 and Liberation Mono 11 depending on which font size I feel like. Courier New doesn't seem to render as well at 11 point as it does at 10, and Liberation Mono is absolutely atrocious below 11 point (the tops of [] don't even show up at 10 point). I've been using basically the same colors since just after I took programmer 1. Here's a screencap

And here's the editor prefs and Liberation Mono if anyone wants it

Yup, and the differences in how we all format code are just as interesting as the editor preferences :)

It's nice to see that my natural progression was moving me towards being in compliance with that style guide.

The only exception is that I prefer mixed case naming conventions instead of using _ to separate words.
