I am still testing and learning, but I tried using Reaper on Ubuntu Studio (18.04) to record from USB. I had to use ALSA as the sound driver (not Pulseaudio or Jack), but it works fine. After selecting ALSA, I chose a small number (8 channels in/out) and "hw:Ui24" as the input and output devices, and left the other options as default.
