Failed ethernet port

An Expression 2 (2014) lost ability to connect to iPad. After painstaking trouble shooting I sent it in for repair. Estimate: $1440! I expected the Factory Repair folks to REPAIR, not just replace boards, in this case apparently, the mother board. Before sending in I bought a used (once!) Expression 1 (no warranty). Guess what does not work on that one right out of the box? Is nothing made to be repairable any more? If so, this is bad design as far as I am concerned. Any comments? (8-25-2019)
