Sound­craft EPM 8 clicking noise?

I've had a Sound­craft EPM 8 for a few weeks. I really liked it. I had it set up and was using it for a few hours, no issues. I unplugged all the inputs and left the mixer on as I went to make a drink. When I came back there was a very loud constant clicking noise coming from my headphones, and now nothing works. I'm not sure if something burnt out or if the smell was just the usual hot electronics. I'm returning it and getting a replacement. I hope it doesn't happen again. Does anyone know if this is common or what I can do to prevent it happening again?
